Memorial Day Weekend-2018

DON’T FORGET THE MEAT!

Join us for what has been a 4 year tradition on Monday, May 28th at 10A.M.

Workout, then grill out after!

Bring some meat to grill, fruit and veggies are great, and BYOB 🙂 Speaking of grills…if someone has a charcoal grill, they could bring to the gym that’d be awesome.

We can store meat, beverages, etc. in our fridge during the workout.

HISTORY

Over the last 4 years, RaceStart coaches and athletes have honored Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy by performing a workout in his memory.  Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy became United States Navy SEAL in July 2002. After participating in several War on Terrorism missions, he was killed on 28 June 2005, after his team was compromised and surrounded by Taliban forces near Asadabad, Afghanistan. Michael Murphy would have been 42 years of age this May.

“Murph”, as his friends would refer to him, was a United States Navy SEAL officer who was awarded the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the War in Afghanistan. He was the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. His other posthumous awards include the Silver Star Medal (which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor) and the Purple Heart.

THE WORKOUT:

“MURPH”

  • 1 mile run
  • 100 pull up
  • 200 push up
  • 300 squats
  • 1 mile run

Modified:

  • row 1200 meters or run 1/2 mile
  • 50 pull ups
  • 100 push ups
  • 200 squats
  • row 1200 meters or run 1/2 mile

RaceStart’s First Mud Run Experience

Last Saturday team RaceStart ventured out to Slinger, WI where we “competed” (I use the word “competed” lightly) in our FIRST EVER mud run!

The race took place at Little Switzerland Ski Hill. To make a long story short, the hills are no joke my friend.

In all seriousness it was a blast! We learned a lot about one another #teambonding

The need for speed suddenly wasn’t as important as completing the event together as a team! All egos were set aside, and everyone rose to each challenge put before us. I think most of us were hoping for more obstacles, but overall I thought it was the perfect race to put our physical fitness to test- After all, this was our first attempt at a mud run. If I’m being honest, I was disappointed to find out that the 10k was actually the 5k…again.   To be clear, the 10k route consisted of running the 5k route 2x’s –  Basically repeating all the SAME obstacles you just completed.  I was under the impression that the 10k would have “more obstacles”, not repeat the same course you just trucked through. For that reason, we decided against the 10k after all. I am happy to report that EVERYONE finished the 5k without any serious injuries!

The hills were definitely a struggle (to say the least). At one point I began to crawl – did I mention I don’t care much for running? With that being said, NO ONE stopped. We all manged to pull through! There were lines leading up to each obstacle which allowed for us to stop and catch our breath. We saw people of all fitness levels competing.

My advice for first timers: Just like any workout, listen to your body, and if you need rest, take it. The struggle is real, but knowing that are able to complete this is the best reward. I am thankful to be physically fit and capable to check this off of my bucket-list, AND extremely grateful that I had all of you to share this experience with!

This race has now sparked the urge to try another one … SOON! It has also given me some fun new ideas to implement in our group fitness training programs at RaceStart 😉 I can’t wait for our next mud run!  This is what it’s all about … to bring like-minded people together and create a positive and healthy environment.

Live. Laugh. love … and lift each other up 🙂 Go RaceStart! #whereathletesareborn

New Summer Group Fitness Classes

Hello warriors! After all the waiting, summer is ALMOST upon us. It always seems like our winters last forever and then all of a sudden summer is here. As quickly as summer pops up, it’s gone. Now I understand the meaning of the song Summertime Sadness 😉

Lets celebrate the summer 2017 by adding more group classes!

Erika will be coaching our new class, Rise & Grind. This class will be offered every Monday and Wednesday morning at 5:30 A.M.. This class will be an addition to our existing class, Koffee & Kettlebells (#kkbells) class which is offered every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings with Bryan.

Rise & Grind is beginning as soon as THIS WEDNESDAY,  June 7th. These classes will be offered for a limited time, so make sure to take advantage of them!

rise-and-grind-milwaukee-gym-group-fitness
Rise & Grid is a group fitness class that mixes traditional calisthenic and body weight movements with interval and strength training.

We offer a variety of fitness styles that are designed in a way to push participants harder than they’d push themselves. Be prepared for anything- indoor/outdoor experience. Running, hill climbing, stair work, MB carries/runs, Sandbag work, etc.

Class Goal:

  • Restore balance in your life
  • Keep your workouts fun, yet challenging
  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Bring out your inner athlete

Combat Cardio

Currently, RaceStart is offering Cardio Combat, led by instructor and Professional MMA fighter, Jordan Griffin, who is currently ranked #1 (145lb weight class) in Wisconsin and King of the Cage! Jordan’s classes are offered Saturdays at 7:30A.M. and Sundays at 8:00 A.M.

Our boxing classes take place in an intimate setting. You will learn proper boxing technique and movements that the professionals use and will help you develop speed, agility, coordination and power. Each class consists of four rounds of 4 minute high intensity training. The first round consists of boxing, followed by circuit training and ending with shadow boxing and/or core finisher.

“Combat Cardio classes with Jordan are awesome. Getting the chance to learn from such an accomplished fighter is a rare opportunity. Not only is it a good work out, I’ve learned a lot about how to fight.”

What Has Your Gym Done For You Lately?

What’s the first step to achieving your fitness goals? Buying a gym membership, right?

The purchase of a traditional gym membership comes at a time of eagerness for change and empowerment. Yet it notoriously leads to frustration in a lack of results and an inability to motivate yourself to show up for those independent sweat sessions.  Once you pay for most memberships you’re on your own and there are just too many variables to keep track of!

How should I program my workouts?  Do I just wing it once I’m at the gym?  How do I use that new machine over there?  Am I supposed to feel this exercise in my shoulders?  Who can I celebrate with, once I finally hit that milestone goal?

Confusion and frustration continue until any initial motivation has fizzled away so much that there’s not even enough left to cancel that membership you’ve stopped using!  Progress isn’t made, and results aren’t achieved.

I don’t think that anyone lacks what it takes to realize their vision of a healthier version of oneself.  Rather, it’s the gym memberships that so many of us pay for month after month that lack what it takes to support our pursuit of that vision.
The support that is missing in traditional gym memberships is found in group classes.  Signing up for a group class is signing up for fitness coaching, and it is joining a community of motivated and like minded peers.

Attending group class gives you access to coaches who take the guesswork out of scheduling and programming workouts.  Coaches help you stay engaged by introducing a wide variety of movements to learn and master, and help to keep you safe with an understanding of proper form and resistance.

Your fellow athletes in class provide camaraderie that keeps you motivated.  They serve as a whole team of people to stay accountable to.  Then, as progress is achieved, each other’s results become as inspiring as your own.  In group class, we crank the music, share equipment, cheer each other on, and we have fun attacking our goals!

Joining RaceStart Training is much more than buying a gym membership.  Becoming a RaceStart athlete is joining a supportive community of people who want to thrive. RaceStart’s athletes and coaches are serious about success- for ourselves and for each other.

If you’re spinning your wheels at a traditional gym or struggling to overcome other barriers in your fitness journey, consider a fresh start.  Consider joining us at RaceStart and the first workout will be on us.

If you are one of RaceStart’s committed athletes, give yourself some extra love today.  Recognize the time and energy that you’ve invested in yourself and the progress you’ve made.  Chances are that you owe yourself more credit than you usually give – YOU ROCK!

So, what’s the first step to achieving your fitness goals?  Is it buying a gym membership?  Or, is it ensuring tangible progress and joining a community of motivated peers by joining us for group fitness at RaceStart Training?

What is a White Elephant Gift Party?

  • White elephant parties have been known to result in playful rivalries between players trying to get sought-after items. The goal of a white elephant party is usually to entertain rather than to gain.
  • Gifts are typically inexpensive, humorous items or used items from home. The term white elephant refers to a gift whose maintenance costs exceed its usefulness.
  • Each participant supplies one wrapped gift. The gifts are placed in a central location, and participants determine in what order they will take turns selecting them

The rules:

We start out with a bowl full of numbers and randomly draw a number- that will determine the order of which we select gifts. The person who drew #1  opens a wrapped gift and the turn ends. On subsequent turns, each person can open a new present or is allowed the option to “steal” another person’s unwrapped gift. When a person’s gift is stolen, that person can either choose another wrapped gift to open or can steal from another player. The game is over when the last person goes and the first person goes again.

  • It is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED not required that you participate in the white elephant gift exchange.
  • IF YOU DO CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE, bring one wrapped present and don’t put your name on it.

October 2016 Athlete of the Month

“And though she be but little she is fierce”

alli-box-jumpAre you familiar with this quote? This is our Alli! She ALWAYS has a great big smile across her face with every rep, every round, and EVERY WORKOUT! She might joke that her arms feel like they are going to fall off, but she NEVER complains! I always tell everyone that “Whatever you put into your workout is exactly what you will get out of it”...and Alli pushes herself EVERY TIME!

When Alli was a “newbie” at RaceStart I can honestly say she was afraid to step out of her shell. Now I see her pushing herself to new levels every day- This way of thinking is now automatic and she’s beginning to see what she’s truly capable of.
It’s so important to remember to smile and just have fun, and that’s something that Alli brings out in all of us! She is so fun to be around, and really challenges you to push yourself harder in class. She might not admit that she’s competitive, but I beg to differ. Alli has been attending our 5:30A.M. classes as well as our night classes- Training 5 days/week, and 3 of the days she trains 2x/day. It’s safe to say that you have reached “rockstar status” 😀
Alli, I’m proud to announce that YOU are our Athlete of the month!

You have come a long way to receive this honor. Only those who are truly deserving are rewarded with “AOTM”. With that being said, some months might not have an “ATOTM” – but over the last few months I have .as you really stepped it up and your hard work has not gone unnoticed! Way to go! You have now taken on the roll to help encourage and empower others.

AOTM Survey:

Occupation?
Sales

Tell us something we may not know about you?
I am obsessed with my dogs. They rock.

When did you start training at RaceStart?
June of this year

Main reason for joining RS?
To find an enjoyable class experience that made me want to be go to the gym.

What were your thoughts after you completed your first RaceStart workout?
Everything hurts and I am dying. Also my arms are going to fall off. All in all I really enjoyed the group setting and how welcoming Antonette was, I didn’t feel pressured into doing anything I didn’t think I could do.

What is your fitness background?
Running and swimming. Also that embarrassing stage in my life where I thought it would be fun to be an ice skater and I got stuck wearing a fuzzy lion costume at my first performance in front of hundreds of people.

What’s your biggest fitness accomplishment?
Lifting weights in general, I’ve always had a fear of how to properly do it.

Has RS affected your life at home, at work, with friends, family life, etc? (underline all that apply)
I would say all of the above. It has made me a more conscious grocery shopper and avoid the free terrible food at work. My friends and family have to put up with me talking about how my arms are going to fall off but find it amusing.

What results have you seen since your first RS workout?
I can lift much more than when I started and I think more about what I am putting into my body. Going to the gym also relieves stress that builds up at work.

What are your future training goals?
To be able to do a pull up with no band as well as do ropes for 20 seconds and not want to die.

What is your most memorable experience with RS?
When I wasn’t fully awake in the morning class and face planted over my kettle bell. Also the time Antonette was riding on top of the sled stacked with weights while Bryan pulled when I can barely pull 50 pounds.

What advice would you give to a “Newbie” or someone considering joining the RaceStart family?
Do it! The classes have a great structure so you don’t do repetitive movements day after day with no results. I also don’t dread going to the gym and everyone is so welcoming it feels like a little family.

Post RS Halloween Event

Many thanks for EVERYONE who contributed

in our Pumpkin Pump Up Halloween Event!

pumpkins

Thank you for your participation and contributions by bringing in a tasty (and healthy) treat,  a pumpkin, and/or dressing up! You all contributed in some way, and for that I can’t begin to tell you how much happiness this brings me.

At RS we love hosting events, but the Halloween Event is extra special. There’s just something about this time of the year- The colors, the smells, the weather, the food- I love it ALL!

However, this particular event helps remind us to not take life too seriously. We can still be silly, a little crazy, AND have fun without sacrificing our workout!

Don’t get me wrong, I still love me some good old competition. Our goal at RaceStart was to make you smile and laugh while getting in a good sweat fest. We are all young at heart and RaceStart wanted to remind everyone that it’s okay to let loose, and feel like a kid again. Sometimes we forget the importance of being able to laugh at ourselves, brush off a bad day, and keep moving forward on this fitness journey we set out on! #enjoylife #embracethecrazy 😉

Celebrate with us at RaceStart Training

img_1348-copyHelp us celebrate Chris Semklo’s Birthday Workout

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 5th @6 P.M.

I’d like to take a minute to thank Chris Semklo, Co-founder of RaceStart Training. Chris does much of the behind the scenes work- He’s  a huge asset and contributor to the success of our gym. He is one of the hardest workers I have EVER known- Chris is both my biggest fan and my driving force. Not only does he have a full time job, he also helps at the gym, trains at RS in his free time, manages 2 properties (5 families), and did I mention he’s married to me too! 😉 Yet, somehow he still has a full head of beautiful hair, ha!

I had a vision and he helped support, build, and nurture my dream.
That rig that we all love doing pull ups on- he built that. All the mats (each weighing in at 100#)- Yep he did the brunt work of that too. We also have him to thank for our perfectly painted “wallball lines”.  As well as assembling pretty much everything right down to my desk (with some help from our community). He also contributes in many other countless ways. He is a very big part of this gym, and we are very lucky to have him! I thank you, Chris,  from the bottom of my heart.

Again, I’d like to invite EVERYONE to celebrate this wonderful man with a special “Happy Birthday Workout”!

Do you have a birthday coming up?
If so,  make sure to let one of our coaches know so we can plan to make your day a little “extra special”. For your birthday we allow you to choose your favorite movements. However, RaceStart will still design the workout, incorporating your movements of choice into the workout of the day for the group classes . You won’t know the programming until the day of…We like to surprise you! A little gift from RS to you 🙂
