Allow me to set the tone for you …

My husband and myself had taken on a few BIG projects over the last few months; renovating an entire house, managing 2 other properties, all while moving our gym/business to a new location -Naturally this has had an effect on my physical and mental health.

It was time to refocus. I needed to change something.

My eating habits were not bad, my workouts were still consistent (training at least 5x/week), but something was missing.

Due to the amount of stress I was under, my body was not responding like it had in the past to my workouts. I was feeling tired all the time instead of energized. I started to rely heavily on coffee and sugar free energy drinks (which by the way, did not help my situation by any means). I needed to recharge my body, and cleanse it from all the toxic chemicals I had consumed (coffee, alcohol, sugar, and dairy (mostly cheese – as much as I hate to admit it, cheese just doesn’t agree well with my body even if it’s on a salad).

After confiding in a friend about my stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and recent weight gain, he told me about a nutrition program he was on, the 24 Day JumpStart program. To be perfectly honest, I blew him off. I thought, “I don’t have time to add one more thing to my plate”. This was not the first time that I had heard of the program which involves a comprehensive yet very manageable plan of healthy eating habits and supplementation.   • 73 air squats in 1 min (beat my personal best by 10 reps)
  • 5 lb gain in shoulder press (I was stuck at this weight for about 2 years)
  • 15 lb gain in 5 rep max back squat (mind blown)

RaceStart’s Take on Nutrition

Hello Warriors!

I recently discovered a new love for cooking. Domesticated! The sites listed HERE make cooking easy and enjoyable- They basically make a hectic lifestyle a little less “cray cray”. I feel much more productive mentally as well as physically when I know my body is receiving the fuel it needs. I notice a difference in how I perform at my job, during my workouts, sleep patterns, as well as my social life.

Remember that to be “fit” or “healthy” we must find balance with our workouts as well as our nutrition. It is very important that we feed our bodies the fuel they need to perform at our desired level of intensity during our workouts.

I believe in the Paleo lifestyle, however, I also believe that it is not for everyone…At least not right away. If you already eat fairly clean, then go for it! However, if you’re someone who eats mostly fast-food then you may need to take a different approach. Maybe try eliminating one thing from your diet at a time, and continue to set new monthly goals. I always say give Paleo living a solid 3 weeks to see if it’s for you. Basically, you are feeding your body whole foods, packed with rich nutrients- No processed crap! During this trial period you should pay attention to your performance at the gym, as well as work and home life, and sleep patterns. Eating whole foods, rich in vitamins will give you more energy during your workouts, but also when you’re at work, or home with your significant other, the kids, and out with your friends.

There is definitely more preparation involved, but that’s also called being an adult. Don’t expect your body to change if you aren’t willing to make a change.

*NOTE: The most common fault with the paleo lifestyle is over eating. Most of the food is AMAZING! Make sure to stick to portion control.

Travel Snacks

If you’re always on the go take a min and “chillax”…You know who you are…I am just as guilty! I understand how difficult it can be to find some time to plan out the week in advance. I also know how I feel if I don’t make the time – My week drags on, my energy level is down, my workouts are not as productive, I’m moody, and I have a hard time focusing on every day tasks. To me, it’s just not worth it anymore. I’ve been there done that, and I’m not going back! Give yourself a little challenge…set a goal (make a food plan) for each week for 5 weeks and see how you feel at the end of the 5th week.

It can be challenging to “paleo” while traveling through airports, or whenever life gets busy. Many times in situations like these it’s easy for people to throw their hands up and say “it’s too hard to eat well” and end up eating a bunch of junk they otherwise wouldn’t. You can avoid eating in the airport entirely and avoid stopping at fast food chains because you’re “hangry”…the key is a little planning and preparation.
Below is a list of helpful snacks to keep handy on those “crazy busy” days where you’re stuck at the office or on the road.

NOTE: Always be prepared!

  • Grass-Fed Jerky,
  • Apple+Whole Avocado (eaten with a spoon)
  • Homemade Trail Mix (walnut pieces, cinnamon coated almonds, large coconut flakes, pumpkin seeds, dried apple, pecans, macadamia nuts)
  • Dried Organic Apples (no sugar or other ingredients added)
  • Organic Pistachios
  • Assorted Raw nuts and seeds (unsalted)-(Trader Joe has the best prices)
  • Celery+ Almond butter (I really enjoy Martha Natha almond butter- no stir involved : )
  • Apple cut up+Almond butter
  • Protein egg muffins
  • Sweet potato w/cinnamon+cayenne pepper+salt
  • Protein balls
  • Plain paleo pancakes in a baggie (if I have some left over from Sun breakfast I take them to go, Google search “paleo pancakes” and be prepared to be amazed 🙂

Weekly Paleo Loaded Nachos

I love this recipe! At my house we actually use ground beef too, and add Penzy’s “bold taco” to the meat. Avocados are a must! I also like to add olives and hot peppers for some extra spice 🙂 This is a staple at our house on Monday night football….or any day we had an awesome workout! Enjoy!
