Late this year

We found out that one of RaceStart’s own, Nadia, was diagnosed at age 37 with Follicular Lymphoma, a type of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Nadia has been training with us for almost 2 years and attends the 4PM class as well as weekend classes.  I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of mental and physical stress Nadia has been through over these last 6 months of treatment.  I can however, count on one hand how many times she has missed a workout during her chemo treatment. This woman trains harder than anyone I know; Determination, undeniable strength, and incredible talent for finding good in every situation- Nadia is the poster child for RaceStart.

Last week (in 5 days to be exact)

Our RaceStart community collected $2,765 to help our warrior fight cancer! We surprised Nadia with a check at our RS Holiday Event over the weekend. Many, many thanks to everyone for coming together and making this holiday extra special. This gym community continues to amaze me and I am extremely grateful for you all.

Words fail me as I attempt to express my gratitude for this EXTREMELY thoughtful and exceedingly generous gift. Simply knowing you went out of your way to think of me and support me, overwhelms my heart.
For me, the gym is a source of solace, comfort, and stability during a time of uncertainty. Having a community there who stands by me and treats me like just another sweaty person trying to get fit and stay sane, is the reason I’ve been a member for so long.
I talk about the gym all the time to people and the most common statement I say is: “the people are kind.” This is what has become even more important to me and dictated who I want to spend my time with and energy on. You have exemplified this to the fullest in this act of generosity and friendship.
For those of you who were there on Saturday, I hope you could feel and sense the gratitude (and surprise!) through my tears, which were those of love and mutual respect. I don’t know how I can repay you, but please know, that the feeling is reciprocal. I don’t just say the words “Fit Family”, but I mean it, and I will always be there for each and everyone one of you. I was going to say you just have to ask, but I realized that I did not ask for this gift and you gave anyway. Maybe that is the truest sense of giving and generosity.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting me through my cancer diagnosis and treatment. Both emotionally and now financially. And I hope you will be there with me through my future celebrations and the inevitable highs and lows to come. RaceStart is a gym. And it HAS made me stronger. I’m stronger with you at my side.

THE SECRET TO OUR RESULTS

I just LOVE Brene Brown and I thought I’d share this clip with you.

I feel that EVERYONE can connect/relate to this on some level.

I’m curious what you will take from it.

Some of you may wonder why I am blogging about this, or “How this is relevant to health and fitness?”

SO I WILL FILL YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET

No matter how many hours we put in at the gym it won’t matter if we continue with self shaming.

We will not reach our fitness goals if we continue to tell ourselves

“I can’t” or “I’m not _______enough”

We must attack our problems from the root. Don’t place blame on your trainer, coach, husband, kids, work, school. Take accountability and try to understand why you’re not seeing results instead of finding more excuses. I promise, after we’re able to change our perspective we’ll find the results we’re looking for.

Remember the RaceStart Motto,

“You can’t continue to do the same thing and expect different results.”

I feel that so many of us are battling with… I’m not ___________ enough.

This leads to “shaming ourselves”- saying hurtful things that we would never say to someone we love or care about….So why do we say them to ourselves if we know they are hurtful?

“BEING VULNERABLE IS NOT A WEAKNESS”

This is something that really hit home for me. Being a woman and business owner in a male dominated field, the last thing I thought I could feel (or show for that matter) was vulnerability. That terrified me. Recently, I have learned that when I show a more vulnerable side (MY AUTHENTIC SELF) that’s when people seem to REALLY HEAR ME and all of a sudden I become relatable.

I find it interesting how Brene Brown makes us realize that being vulnerable is courage

The courage to be ‘IMPERFECT”…which is a connection to authenticity.

It’s okay to NOT have it ‘all together’.  I can’t tell you how many times I would “freak out” if someone would stop by to visit me at the gym or house (made no difference) and everything didn’t appear to be “perfect”.  Like I said, it becomes exhusting! Believe it or not, it was easier for me take on another task for the day and clean things up, rather than let someone see things out of order. If I was sick as a dog and a family member told me they were going to stop by, I’d pull myself together and clean up the house.

I now realize how rediculious this sounds.

THE POWER OF CREATIVITY

Unused creativity is dangerous. It turns into greed, rage, and becomes toxic.

“THERE IS NO INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY WITHOUT FAILURE.”

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

I wrote a blog not too long ago that was really more of a self reflection. In this blog I was more vulnerable than normal- I let people see the person who “doesn’t have it all together”- and it felt so good to be able to embrace my “imperfections”.

It was liberating, instead of ALWAYS STRIVING TO HAVE IT ALL TOGETHER …that’s exhausting!

 

I actually wrote my blog before I stumbled across Brene Brown. After I posted my blog, someone had asked if I had heard of her and suggested to look her up. I’m glad that I did.

With that being said I hope you enjoy 🙂

 

I Challenge You

One area that many of us, myself included, suffer with are PUSH UPS (PU). For 1 month I’d like us to really focus on correcting our “perfect push up” form.

Things to keep in mind while performing “perfect push ups” :

  • Perform mobility on shoulders first (refer to “Monthly Mobility”)
  • Keep elbows turned in, close to body
  • Activate the glutes
  • Core tight
  • Chest, hips, and thighs should touch the ground at the same time.

DRILLS:

  • Mix up your starting position. Start from the ground (or your sticking position) and push yourself all the way up into a bridge and lower yourself back down onto your knees first if you’re struggling.
  • Practice sets of ring push ups
  • Get some bench press in
  • TGU
  • Practice Plank and L-Holds

THE CHALLENGE:

EVERY DAY FOR 1 MONTH COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING (KEEP IN MIND YOU CAN USE THIS IN YOUR WARM UPS)

PART A: 5 Rounds ( not for time )

  • 10 sec hold at bottom position of PU, then push yourself up into a bridge (or top PU position)
  • REPEAT 4 MORE TIMES.

PART B: 10 strict push ups ( not for time )

ADVANCED:

  1. Start from the ground and push yourself all the way up into a bridge.
  2. Then, lower yourself into the bottom position of your push up.
  3. Make sure your chest, hips, and thighs come with you at the same time.
  4. Elbows turned in. (avoid “breaking at the back” ) keep core and glutes tight

MODIFIED:

  • You can modify by dropping to your knees, keep elbows in, lower your chest, hips, and thighs with you to the floor.(or as far as you can without allowing your hips to sink)
  • Your chest, hips, and thighs should reach the floor at the same time.
  • If you are not strong enough to do so without your hips dropping on the way up, then only go as far you can control all 3 elements.
